How to configure a cloud shell?

by Hema Gunasekaran / Wednesday, 29 November 2023 / Published in Cloud Computing, EITC/CL/GCP Google Cloud Platform, Getting started with GCP, Cloud Shell

To configure a Cloud Shell in the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), you need to follow a few steps. Cloud Shell is a web-based, interactive shell environment that provides access to a virtual machine (VM) with pre-installed tools and libraries. It allows you to manage your GCP resources and perform various tasks without the need for local installations. Here is a comprehensive explanation of how to configure a Cloud Shell:

1. Open the GCP Console: Start by opening the GCP Console in your web browser. You can access it by navigating to the GCP Console URL: console.cloud.google.com.

2. Enable the Cloud Shell: Once you are in the GCP Console, click on the Cloud Shell icon located at the top right corner of the console window. It looks like a small terminal icon. This will open the Cloud Shell in a new pane at the bottom of the console.

3. Choose a project: If you have multiple GCP projects, you need to select the project in which you want to configure the Cloud Shell. You can use the project switcher drop-down at the top of the console to choose the desired project.

4. Configure the Cloud Shell: When you open the Cloud Shell for the first time, it will prompt you to choose a region and configure the Cloud Shell environment. You can select the region closest to your location to optimize performance. The Cloud Shell environment will be automatically provisioned for you.

5. Customize the Cloud Shell: You have the option to customize your Cloud Shell environment by changing the font size, color scheme, and other settings. To access these options, click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the Cloud Shell pane. This will open the Preferences dialog box where you can make the desired changes.

6. Accessing the Cloud Shell: Once the Cloud Shell is configured, you can start using it to interact with your GCP resources. The Cloud Shell provides a command-line interface (CLI) with a Linux shell prompt. You can execute various commands to manage your GCP resources, run scripts, and perform other tasks.

7. Using the Cloud Shell: The Cloud Shell comes with pre-installed tools and libraries, including the Google Cloud SDK, which provides command-line access to GCP services. You can use the Cloud SDK commands to create and manage resources, deploy applications, and perform other operations. Additionally, you can install additional tools and libraries as needed.

For example, to create a new Compute Engine instance using the Cloud Shell, you can use the following gcloud command:

gcloud compute instances create my-instance --zone=us-central1-a --machine-type=n1-standard-1

This command will create a new Compute Engine instance named "my-instance" in the "us-central1-a" zone with the machine type "n1-standard-1".

Configuring a Cloud Shell in GCP involves enabling the Cloud Shell, selecting a project, configuring the environment, customizing the settings, and accessing the Cloud Shell to manage your GCP resources. The Cloud Shell provides a convenient and powerful way to interact with GCP without the need for local installations.
