How ML tuning parameters and hyperparameters are related to each other?

by Hema Gunasekaran / Tuesday, 14 November 2023 / Published in Artificial Intelligence, EITC/AI/GCML Google Cloud Machine Learning, First steps in Machine Learning, The 7 steps of machine learning

Tuning parameters and hyperparameters are related concepts in the field of machine learning. Tuning parameters are specific to a particular machine learning algorithm and are used to control the behavior of the algorithm during training. On the other hand, hyperparameters are parameters that are not learned from the data but are set prior to the training process.

In machine learning, we often have a set of parameters that need to be adjusted to optimize the performance of a model. These parameters control various aspects of the learning algorithm, such as the learning rate, the regularization strength, or the number of hidden units in a neural network. Tuning these parameters involves finding the best combination of values that leads to the best performance of the model on a given task.

Hyperparameters, on the other hand, are parameters that are not learned from the data but are set by the user before the training process begins. These parameters define the structure of the model and control the learning algorithm itself. Examples of hyperparameters include the number of layers in a neural network, the type of activation function to use, or the maximum depth of a decision tree.

The reason why hyperparameters are often referred to as tuning parameters is that they need to be tuned to find the best values for a given problem. This tuning process is typically done through a trial-and-error approach, where different combinations of hyperparameter values are tested and evaluated. The goal is to find the set of hyperparameters that leads to the best performance of the model on a validation set.

It is worth noting that tuning hyperparameters can be a challenging task, as the space of possible values for each hyperparameter can be large. Moreover, the impact of each hyperparameter on the model's performance can be complex and non-linear. Therefore, it is common to use techniques such as grid search or random search to explore the hyperparameter space efficiently.

Tuning parameters and hyperparameters are closely related in the field of machine learning. Tuning parameters refer to the parameters that are specific to a particular learning algorithm and control its behavior during training. Hyperparameters, on the other hand, are parameters that are set by the user before the training process and define the structure of the model and the learning algorithm itself. Tuning hyperparameters is an important step in machine learning, as it allows us to find the best combination of values that leads to optimal model performance.

EITCA Academy is a part of the European IT Certification framework

The European IT Certification framework has been established in 2008 as a Europe based and vendor independent standard in widely accessible online certification of digital skills and competencies in many areas of professional digital specializations. The EITC framework is governed by the European IT Certification Institute (EITCI), a non-profit certification authority supporting information society growth and bridging the digital skills gap in the EU.
